On May 13, 1993, George Brett achieved the exceedingly rare mark of 3,000 hits and 300 HRs when he went long against Cleveland, joining Hank Aaron, Stan Musial, Carl Yastrzemski, Willie Mays and Al Kaline as the only players who had reached that mark at the time.
To this day, only Brett, Aaron, Musial, Mays and Miguel Cabrera have reached the even rarer achievement of .300 avg., 300 HRs and 3,000 hits.
Which leads us to ask… is Brett the greatest offensive third baseman of all time? While he was mostly average defensively, there are very few third basemen who put up numbers that approach Brett’s.
Brett retired at the end of the 1993 season after 21 productive years, 3 batting titles and arrived in Cooperstown in 1999 with 98.2% of the vote (who were the fools who didn’t vote for Brett?).
