Joe Namath turns 82 today (May 31, 2025).
His career is a reminder that you don’t have to win ’em all to be remembered as one of the greats. Namath boasts a career record of 62-63-4 (sub-.500) as a quarterback and a single Super Bowl championship to his name. And in all honesty, his period of great play lasted just the first five years of his career, with a one-season resurgence in 1972.
Otherwise, Broadway Joe was an average to below-average pro quarterback for much of his career. But that didn’t stop the mythos and legend-making departments from building him into a larger than life figure who was almost omnipresent in American culture in the 1960s-1980s.
Honestly, would Namath even be a Hall of Famer if he hadn’t played for the New York Jets, with their big city shine and allure? 70th all-time on the career passing yards list and 62 wins? We’re going to say probably not.
But that doesn’t mean we don’t love what he brought to the game both as a player and after his playing days were done. What do you think? Is Broadway Joe the toast of the town or is it mostly just Big Apple hype?
