Happy 78th birthday to Ken Singleton, born June 10, 1947! Is it just us, or is something just a little off with the inset action artwork for his 1982 Donruss Diamond Kings card? Maybe it’s understandable that Dick Perez didn’t quite know who Ken Singleton was. He’s not exactly a household name outside of Baltimore, and certainly not the first name that comes to mind when you think of the best players of the 1970s and 80s.
But we started reading up and reviewing his stats. What we re-discovered was Singleton the superstar. A three-time All-Star as a right fielder and DH with the Baltimore Orioles, Singleton twice finished in the top 3 for American League MVP (1977, 1979) and batted over .300 four times in his career. He also was a key piece of that 1983 #WorldSeries championship Orioles team alongside a young Cal Ripken, and other stars like Eddie Murray, Jim Palmer and Dennis Martinez.
So, while we’d long forgotten about Singleton’s accomplishments (and apparently Perez-Steele Galleries forgot even more about him), we thought it was worth talking about what a fine athlete and broadcaster Singleton was and is. When you think about great ballplayers that most people might have forgotten about by now, who comes to your mind?
