Who remembers these awesome manager cards from 1978 Topps baseball? We fell in love with these cards when we were very young because Dad had bought a wax box each year from 1978 to 1980 and saved all of the cards for us as we got older. He’d periodically show us these “really old” cards (it was about 1982 at the time) in his shoebox and we’d marvel at the Pete Rose, Nolan Ryan and Dale Murphy cards, and especially those manager cards with the old school black and white “As Player” photos that somehow made them feel even more vintage than they were. 1978 had a beautiful crop of managers too – Bobby Cox, Earl Weaver, Sparky Anderson, Tommy Lasorda, Ralph Houk and others in their prime and many en route to Hall of Fame careers. Usually manager cards, like checklists, were throwaways that ended up at the bottom of a big box of junk cards. But for us, those 78s were different, somehow special. They reminded us that these “old guys” who managed our favorite teams now actually played at one time, some with more success than others. What do you think? Were you a fan of vintage manager baseball cards?
