A royal flush indeed. On April 14, 1990, starter Bret Saberhagen, closer Mark Davis and the Kansas City Royals made baseball history by defeating the Toronto Blue Jays 3-1 at Royals Stadium, marking the first time that two reigning Cy Young Award winners both played pivotal roles in the same victory. Saberhagen got the win while Davis secured the save. Saberhagen, who had secured his second Cy Young Award in 1989 with a stellar 23-6 record, started the game for the Royals and delivered an impressive performance, pitching 7 1/3 innings, allowing six hits, one run, and striking out five batters. Davis, who had earned the National League Cy Young Award in 1989 with 44 saves for the San Diego Padres, joined the Royals as a free agent in December 1989. He pitched a perfect ninth inning, retiring all three batters he faced to secure the save. Unfortunately for Kansas City, it was probably high point of the season. They finished the year in sixth place in the American League West, 27 1/2 games out with a record of 75-86.
